Week 12 - Postmodernism

This week, we were given the task to investigate individually given tasks.

I was given the following: "What is postmodern irony in design and what does it look like?" "To begin, see Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi and Alessi designs post 1945 and research links on moodle powerpoint and search the internet and the library".

While I did investigate into irony, I was unaware of the context and got lost: instead investigating the irony which arises from the contradiction of post-modernism's definition.

I took several examples from the architectures noted and went on to compare various works in my own writing (attatched in appendices) and the capitalized on the first contradiction in post-modernism I saw: the contradiction of difference between Post-modernism and modernism in many conteporary works.

For example, while Frank Ghery's Guggernhiem Musiem is unique and distinctly post-modernism, other works such as 1000 de La Gauchebere comes across as rather confusing as I am unable to identify distinct elements of ordament which seem to have been abandoned.

While modernism aims to abolism ordament, post-modernism celibrates it by experimenting with various styles and patterns in unusual and nostalgic ways. The fact it's demonstration in this case visually appeared very very similar to a modernist work (and often does in more serious cases) left me confused.

Is this the irony of post-modernism?

Apparently not.
